How do you play Gin Rummy?

Both players receive ten cards from a standard 52-card deck. Collect three or four of the same rank, or runs of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. Aces are low. Each turn, draw one card and discard one. Cards outside melds are your deadwood: aces count 1, face cards 10 and number cards their value.

On the opening turn, the non-dealer can take the face-up card or pass. If both players pass, the non-dealer draws from the stock. A card taken from the discard pile cannot be discarded immediately.

Knock after a discard leaves 10 or fewer deadwood points. Your opponent can lay off unmatched cards onto your melds. If your deadwood stays lower, you score the difference. If the defender ties or beats your deadwood, they score the difference plus a 25-point undercut bonus.

Zero deadwood is gin: score 25 plus the opponent’s deadwood, with no layoffs. Our North American rules use 25-point gin and undercut bonuses, first to 100, without box bonuses or big gin. A hand with only two stock cards left ends without points and is redealt with the same dealer.

Does Gin Rummy work on a phone or keyboard?

Yes. Tap a pile, select a card, then tap Discard or Knock. Cards wrap into readable rows on small screens. Use Tab and Enter, arrow keys between cards, D for stock, U for upcard, X to discard and K to knock. No dragging or quick reactions are needed.
