How to play with a real deck

The short version of each game, for the kitchen table. Our tables deal, check and score by the same rules.

Cribbage

One 52-card deck, plus a cribbage board or pencil and paper.

  1. Deal six each. Both throw two cards into the dealer’s crib, then cut a starter card.
  2. Take turns laying cards and calling the running total. Hitting 15 or 31 scores 2; pairs and runs score too.
  3. Count your four cards with the starter: fifteens, pairs, runs, flushes and his nobs. The dealer counts the crib.
  4. Peg your points as you go. First to 121 wins.
Full Cribbage rules

Gin Rummy

One 52-card deck and something to keep score. Aces are low.

  1. Deal ten each and turn the next card face up to start the discard pile.
  2. On your turn, draw from the stock or the discard pile, then discard one card.
  3. Build sets of three or four of a kind, and runs of three or more in one suit.
  4. Knock when your unmatched cards add up to 10 or less, or go gin with none. First to 100 wins.
Full Gin Rummy rules

Crazy Eights

One 52-card deck. Two to six can play.

  1. Deal five each and turn the next card face up to start the discard pile.
  2. Play a card that matches the top card’s suit or rank, or draw from the stock.
  3. Eights are wild: play one on anything and name the next suit.
  4. Empty your hand first to score the cards left in the other hands. First to 200 wins.

Questions about card games for couples

What are the best card games for couples?

For two players, Cribbage, Gin Rummy and Crazy Eights are the classics: Cribbage for strategy and counting, Gin Rummy for a tense duel, and Crazy Eights for something quick and light. If you’d rather be on the same side, play Euchre or Pinochle as partners against computer players. All of them are free to start here, online or with your own deck.

What card games can two people play with a standard deck?

Gin Rummy, Crazy Eights and Cribbage all use one standard 52-card deck; Cribbage also needs a pegboard, or pencil and paper to keep score. The short rules on this page get you started at the table, or play them online with the cards dealt and scored for you.

Are there conversation card games for couples?

Yes. Just Us has 60 conversation cards in four sections and guided date-night sessions; print the cards or play on one screen, and try one session free. For something quicker, play the couples deck of Would You Rather on your own phones, or read our would you rather questions for couples.

Can we play card games together online from different places?

Yes. Open a private table, send your partner the link and you each play on your own phone or computer, with your hand on your own screen. Keep your usual call going to talk. Our guide to games for long-distance couples has more ideas.

Are these card games free?

Yes, to start. Cribbage, Gin Rummy, Crazy Eights, Euchre and Pinochle are free against the computer, with no sign-up. A free private table plays a complete game of Cribbage, Euchre or Pinochle, or one scored hand of Gin Rummy or Crazy Eights. The host’s At Yours Plus (US$4.99/month or US$29/year) adds full matches and series, and your partner never pays.

Do we both need an account?

No. The host opens the table and your partner joins with a nickname. Free tables need no account at all; only the host signs in to use At Yours Plus.
