Euchre in short
Euchre is a fast trick-taking card game for four players in two partnerships, played with a 24-card deck from 9 up to ace. One side names trump and must win at least three of the five tricks; the jack of trump (the right bower) and the other jack of the same colour (the left bower) are the two highest cards. The first side to 10 points wins.
Players
Solo: you and a computer partner against two computer players. Online: 2–4 people on their own devices, with computer players in any empty seats.
Devices
Any phone, tablet or computer with a modern browser. Nothing to download and no account to play.
Time
About 15 to 25 minutes for a game to 10. There is no turn timer.
Free or At Yours Plus
Complete games are free, solo and at a private table. The host’s At Yours Plus adds 5- or 15-point games, house rules and a game-night series.
Rooms, phones and privacy
Each screen only receives its own five cards. The kitty stays hidden apart from the card turned up for everyone, and only the dealer sees their discard.
Partners and computer playersWith two or three people, computer players take the empty seats. In the lobby the host can swap seats: play as partners against the computer, or face each other with a computer partner each.
RoomsRooms last two hours, and the host can add time in the final 30 minutes. Reopen your invitation in the same browser to get your seat back after a disconnection. Room data is removed when the room closes or expires.
How do you play Euchre?
- Sit across from your partner. The dealer gives everyone five cards, three then two, and turns the top card of the four left over face up.
- Round one: starting at the dealer’s left, each player passes or orders it up. If anyone orders it up, that suit is trump and the dealer picks up the card and discards one.
- Round two: if everyone passed, the card is turned down and each player may name any other suit as trump or pass. With stick the dealer, the dealer must choose.
- Whoever names trump makes it for their side, and may go alone while their partner sits out.
- The player left of the dealer leads. Follow the suit led if you can; remember the left bower belongs to trump. The highest trump wins, otherwise the highest card of the suit led.
- After five tricks, the makers score 1 for three or four tricks, 2 for all five, or 4 for all five alone. If they take fewer than three they are euchred and the defenders score 2. First side to 10 wins.

What is the trump order in Euchre?
The right bower is the highest card, then the left bower, then the ace, king, queen, ten and nine of trump. Here hearts are trump:
| Rank | Card | Name | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | J♥ | Right bower | The jack of the trump suit: the highest card in the hand. |
| 2 | J♦ | Left bower | The other jack of the same colour. It counts as a heart for the whole hand. |
| 3 | A♥ | Ace of trump | |
| 4 | K♥ | King of trump | |
| 5 | Q♥ | Queen of trump | |
| 6 | 10♥ | Ten of trump | |
| 7 | 9♥ | Nine of trump | The lowest trump still beats any card of another suit. |
In the other suits the order is ace, king, queen, jack, ten, nine. The suit of the same colour as trump has only five cards that hand, because its jack has become the left bower.
How do you score Euchre?
Only one side scores each hand: the makers if they take three or more tricks, or the defenders if they euchre the makers.
| Result | Points |
|---|---|
| Makers take 3 or 4 tricks | 1 point to the makers |
| Makers take all 5 tricks (a march) | 2 points to the makers |
| A lone maker takes 3 or 4 tricks | 1 point to the makers |
| A lone maker takes all 5 tricks | 4 points to the makers |
| Makers take fewer than 3 tricks (euchred) | 2 points to the defenders |
Many players keep score with a six and a four from the spare cards, sliding one over the other to show the points. The table here does the same, lighting one pip per point.
Euchre questions
How many cards are in a euchre deck?
A euchre deck has 24 cards: the 9, 10, jack, queen, king and ace of each of the four suits. Each player gets five cards, and the four left over form the kitty, with the top card turned face up for bidding.
What is the left bower?
The left bower is the jack of the same colour as trump, and it counts as the second-highest trump. If hearts are trump, the jack of diamonds becomes a heart for the whole hand: it follows hearts, not diamonds, and only the right bower (the jack of hearts) beats it.
What does going alone mean?
Going alone means the player who names trump plays without their partner, who sits the hand out. Take all five tricks alone and your side scores 4 points instead of 2; three or four tricks still score 1, and fewer than three gives the other side 2.
What is stick the dealer?
Stick the dealer is a popular house rule: if nobody names trump in either round, the dealer must name a suit instead of throwing the hand in. It keeps every deal moving. Here it is on by default; solo players can switch it off, and so can a host with At Yours Plus.
Can two or three people play Euchre here?
Yes. A private table seats two to four people on their own phones or computers, and computer players fill any empty seats. Two friends can be partners against the computer or opponents with a computer partner each; the host arranges the seats.
How long does a game of Euchre take?
A game to 10 points usually takes about 15 to 25 minutes, roughly ten deals. That is an estimate, not a timer: the computer players wait for you. Games to 5 are quicker and games to 15 longer.
Is this Euchre game free?
Yes. Complete games to 10 against the computer are free and unlimited, with stick the dealer on or off, and your game saves on this device. A private table with friends also plays a complete game to 10 free. There is no download or sign-up.
What does At Yours Plus add to a private table?
The host’s At Yours Plus lets a private table play to 5, 10 or 15 points, switch stick the dealer on or off, and keep a private game-night series across rematches and other games. At Yours Plus is US$4.99/month or US$29/year. Only the host needs it; guests always join free.
