In short

Hard would you rather questions make both options cost something you value, like “Would you rather know what everyone really thinks of you, or never know what anyone thinks of you?” There is no clever answer, so the conversation is the point. Here are 60+ original dilemmas in six groups, with no politics, religion or anything graphic. Read them aloud, print free cards, or play them as a free game where everyone picks in secret and predicts a friend.

A hard Would You Rather dilemma in play on two choice cards

How to play hard Would You Rather

  1. Pick a deck. Open the hard-choices deck in a free room, or pick one question for the whole table to argue about.
  2. Choose in secret. Everyone picks A or B on their own phone. Nobody sees a choice until every pick is in.
  3. Predict a friend. Guess what one named player chose for 2 points. Every third round, guess how many people chose A.
  4. Reveal and ask why. The room shows every pick and keeps score. The last round is worth 4 points.

No phones? Read a question aloud, count to three, and everyone points left for A or right for B.

Common questions about Would You Rather

What makes a would you rather question hard?

Both options take away something you care about, or both give you something you want, so you have to rank your own values. “Would you rather have more time or more money?” is hard because the answer changes with your week.

Are these hard questions OK for work or family?

Yes. They are dilemmas about time, memory, trust, talent and how you would like to live, with no politics, religion or anything graphic. Teenagers and adults enjoy them most.

How do you talk about a hard question without it becoming an argument?

Ask “what would make you switch?” rather than “why is that wrong?”. Let the smaller group explain first, and remember that nobody has to defend an answer. In the online game, anyone can pass a question without saying why.

How many hard questions are there?

65 in six groups: tough trade-offs, time and memory, truth and trust, talents, big life choices and impossible choices.
