How to play FreeCell Solitaire

Move all 52 cards to four foundations, building each suit from Ace to King. On the eight columns, place cards in descending order with alternating red and black suits. Four free cells each hold one card. Any card can fill an empty column. There is no stock or hidden card: your planning starts with the entire deal visible.
Select a card, then a cell, column or foundation. A valid descending sequence can travel together when enough empty cells and columns are available. Double-click a top card to send it to its foundation if it fits. Dragging is optional.
How many cards can I move in FreeCell?
The maximum is (empty free cells + 1) × 2empty columns. An empty destination column does not count. With two empty cells and one spare column, you can move six cards to an occupied column, or three to that empty column. Cards must still form a legal alternating-color sequence.
Keep a cell open until a move unlocks something useful. An empty column is especially powerful: use it to rearrange a run, rather than filling it with a card you cannot move again.
A daily deal and three ways to think
The full daily FreeCell deal is free, with undo, hints and a saved board in this browser. It changes at midnight UTC. Deals are shuffled deterministically and are not guaranteed solvable. Our deal numbers are original and do not correspond to Microsoft FreeCell numbers.
All Access adds 24 fixed challenge deals, each checked with a complete legal solution: eight Classic deals, eight Two Cell deals with only two holding spaces, and eight Baker’s Game deals with same-suit descending columns. These are different rules, not just new table colors. Active members can reopen any challenge. Sign in before starting to save verified completions to your account.
FreeCell on a phone or with a keyboard
On a phone, tap the exposed top edge of a card to select it, then tap its destination. Use Larger cards to open a wider, scrollable table, or rotate to landscape. Long columns remain scrollable. Keyboard players use Tab to reach a card or destination and Enter or Space to select. Escape clears the selection; U undoes and H gives a legal-move hint when the table has focus.
Collect safe cards sends eligible cards to foundations when the lower opposite-color ranks are already home. Hint suggests a legal move, not a solved path. Read our FreeCell vs Klondike comparison. For a game with a stock pile, try Klondike Solitaire; for matching tiles, try Petal Mahjong.
