How to play Halloween Mahjong
Pair identical open tiles to remove them. A tile is open when nothing sits on top of it and its left or right side is free. This is a Halloween edition of our Mahjong Solitaire, Petal: the rules are the same, with 24 original Halloween tile faces such as pumpkins, bats, friendly ghosts and black cats. Faces match exactly.
Five shapes, a daily board and an eight-stage path
Candy corn has 48 tiles, Cauldron 64, Bat wings 72, Pumpkin 80 and Haunted manor 88. The daily board changes shape each day, with the Haunted manor on October 31, and gives everyone the same deal for that UTC date. The Moonlit path has eight chosen boards; clearing one opens the next. Later stages use deals where matching at random more often ends in a dead end. Every deal has a verified route to a clear board, but a different order can still leave you stuck.
Stars, hints, undo and reshuffle
Three stars: no hints or reshuffles, and three undos at most. Two stars: up to three hints and reshuffles combined. One star: any clear. Hint lights an available pair without promising it is the best choice. Undo takes back a match or a reshuffle. Reshuffle keeps the remaining faces and rearranges them with a route to completion.
Spooky, not scary
Friendly ghosts, cute bats and glowing jack-o’-lanterns, with no jump scares or gore. The night ambience of fireflies, moonlight and a passing bat can be turned off in the game menu, and it stays off when your device asks for reduced motion.
